Alcohol and Other Drug Counselling

For many people, alcohol or drug use doesn't begin as a problem. It begins as a solution, a way to manage pain, pressure, stress, or the weight of experiences that haven't yet been processed. AOD counselling at Process Therapy is about understanding that, without judgement, and building something more effective in its place.

Understanding What's Driving It

More than coping strategies are needed when a substance or behaviour has become entrenched. Real change requires understanding what's underneath it, the pain, the patterns, the triggers, the internal logic that keeps the cycle turning. This isn't about assigning blame or unpacking your entire history. It's about getting underneath the behaviour to the root of the problem, where change is actually possible.

As a specialist AOD Counsellor with a background in trauma, I work with the whole picture. What looks like a substance problem on the surface usually has unresolved trauma or chronic stress running beneath it. Addressing only the behaviour, without working with what's underneath it, is why so many attempts at change don't hold.

Practical Tools. Real Change.

Process Therapy offers something different to standard AOD support. As well as working with the underlying issue, you'll leave with concrete, actionable strategies - tools that work in the real world, under real pressure.

That means practical skills for managing cravings when they hit, harm reduction approaches that meet you where you are, strategies for maintaining abstinence without white-knuckling it, and the ability to identify your high-risk moments before they become high-risk situations.

When trauma is part of the picture, MEMI can be integrated into the process to address the root cause driving the behaviour. So both the wound and the coping response can be resolved, not just managed.

This is structured, specialist support, focused, forward-moving, and built around what actually works.
